Padua Hospital Marks 100th kidney transplant In Five Months Under Dr. Lucrezza Furian

WORLD NEWS – ITALY: The Centro Nazionale Trapianti di Rene e pancreas at Padova’s Azienda Ospedaliera reached its 100th kidney transplant on the night of May 26, achieving the milestone within five months and setting a record caseload for the year. The milestone reinforces the center’s role as a national reference for kidney and pancreas transplantation.

Directed by Dr. Lucrezza Furian, the Padua program—active since 1988—reported 224 interventions in 2025 and maintains a full spectrum of services: combined organ procedures, a living-donor pancreas network, ABO-incompatible donations and the only dedicated pediatric transplant center in the Veneto region. These offerings position the unit at the forefront of complex transplant care in Italy.

Long-term outcomes are strong: survival after kidney transplantation at the center exceeds 90% according to evaluations from the Centro Nazionale Trapianti. Clinicians attribute those results to precise surgical expertise, a tightly coordinated support network of nurses and physicians, rapid organ procurement protocols and the consent of donor families that enables timely transplantation.

Beyond surgical programs, Dr. Furian coordinates Italy’s sole center for cellular therapy for diabetes, overseeing procurement and use of pancreatic islets, and in September 2025 she became president of the Società Italiana Trapianti d’Organo. Padua’s influence also reaches Europe through Umberto Cillo, director of hepatobiliopancreatic surgery and liver transplantation at the same university, who leads the European Society of Organ Transplantation.
