INDIA: Sparsh Hospital Performs Karnataka’s First Artificial Heart Transplants with Advanced HeartMate 3 LVAD Technology

SPARSH Hospital, RR Nagar has made history by performing Karnataka’s first and second artificial heart transplants using the HeartMate 3 Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), marking a major advancement in cardiac care within the state. The surgeries, performed on a 69-year-old patient, highlight SPARSH’s emergence as a Centre of Excellence in Heart Failure and Transplant Surgery.

The HeartMate 3 is a third-generation device that uses cutting-edge magnetic levitation technology, allowing the pump to operate without friction. This reduces wear, minimizes complications, and significantly improves both durability and patient outcomes.

“These devices not only bridge the gap for patients awaiting heart transplants but also act as long-term solutions for many,” said Dr. Vikranth Veerana, Senior Consultant, Cardiology. Dr. Ashwin, CTVS and Transplant Surgeon at SPARSH, emphasized the transformative potential of Full Flow Technology, which greatly enhances longevity and quality of life for patients with end-stage heart failure.

By adopting the HeartMate 3 LVAD, SPARSH Hospital has positioned itself at the forefront of advanced cardiac care in India, offering hope to patients for whom traditional transplant options may not be immediately available.
