Julian Ramos, a 33-year-old man from Anaheim, became the first dual organ transplant patient at Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, receiving both a kidney and a pancreas. For more than half his life, Ramos battled diabetes, which led to kidney failure and a stroke at the age of 29. After enduring dialysis three times a week for three years, Ramos received the life-changing call that a matching donor had been found, offering him newfound hope and freedom from diabetes and dialysis for the first time in nearly 20 years.

The successful dual organ transplant presents a new life for Ramos, who describes the experience as winning the lottery. His journey took a miraculous turn after receiving organs from a 23-year-old donor, transforming his daily outlook and appreciation for life. According to Ramos’s doctors, only about 800 such dual transplants are performed in the U.S. each year. They noted the immediate success of his surgery, as Ramos began making urine right after the procedure, eliminating his need for dialysis, and his blood sugar levels normalized, providing a profound relief and new quality of life.

Beyond his personal health revelation, Ramos aspires to change perceptions and raise awareness about organ donation within the Latino community. With a critical shortage of organ donors, particularly among Latinos, Ramos emphasizes the life-changing impact that organ donation can have. Statistics illustrate a stark disparity, as only 36% of Latino Americans on transplant lists received organs last year compared to 60% of white Americans. His message seeks to encourage more people in the Latino community to consider organ donation, thereby potentially saving lives and offering renewed hope to those in need.
