Donor Alliance has recently appointed Serena Altamirano, the Donor & Family Services Manager, to serve on the Governing Board of Directors for the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT) on a national level. Altamirano also serves on Donor Alliance’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Committee, which aims to increase diversity and cultural competency within the organization and engage underrepresented communities in the region in conversations about organ donation. As of now, almost 60% of individuals on the national organ transplant waiting list come from multicultural communities, with the highest percentages of candidates being Hispanic, African American, and Asian/Pacific Islander.
In addition to her role at Donor Alliance, Altamirano has also served on AMAT’s Latino Working Group. As a board member at AMAT, she will be involved in shaping the organization’s direction and impact. AMAT focuses on increasing tissue donation in minoritized communities, and Serena’s experience with tissue donation will be an asset to AMAT as they work to raise awareness and address the unique needs and challenges of multicultural communities. Donor Alliance remains committed to increasing awareness and understanding of organ donation and transplantation in multicultural communities.
