Donor Alliance Manager Appointed to National Transplantation Organization Leadership

A recent announcement by Donor Alliance states that Serena Altamirano, the organization’s Donor & Family Services Manager, has been appointed to the Governing Board of Directors for the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT). Altamirano’s role will be to raise awareness around organ and tissue donation and transplantation among diverse communities on a national level. Donor Alliance is focused on increasing diversity within its workforce and providing cultural competency training, in addition to creating relationships and trust within underrepresented communities to discuss the importance of registering as an organ, eye, and tissue donor.

This appointment is significant, as almost 60% of those on the waiting list for a life-saving organ transplant nationally are from multicultural communities. Altamirano’s experience in tissue donation at Donor Alliance will be beneficial to AMAT as it focuses on increasing tissue donation within minoritized communities. The mission of Donor Alliance is to save and heal lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation, particularly within Colorado and Wyoming. AMAT’s mission is to support partners in the transplant field to ensure equitable access to transplantation services and address the unique needs of multicultural communities in organ transplantation.
