DHR Health, a medical facility in the Rio Grande Valley, has announced that they will be offering liver transplants to patients later this year. Currently, there are nearly 1,400 people in the Valley on the waiting list for a liver transplant. This means that patients in need of the procedure have to travel outside the area. However, thanks to the efforts of DHR Health, liver transplants will soon be available locally.
Dr. Fernando Membreño, a Transplant Hepatologist at DHR Health, stated that the hospital has been working for the past three years to bring liver transplants to the area. Once they receive final approval from the United Network for Organ Sharing, which regulates the U.S. organ transplant system, DHR Health plans to complete at least 30 to 60 liver transplants per year. This will be a life-changing development for the residents of the Rio Grande Valley who are in need of this life-saving procedure.
The availability of liver transplants at DHR Health will alleviate the burden of patients having to travel outside the Valley for the procedure. It will ensure that individuals in need receive timely medical care without having to endure the challenges and expenses associated with traveling for treatment. The local availability of liver transplants will greatly improve the healthcare options and outcomes for those in the Rio Grande Valley region.
