Muhsin Husain, a 24-year-old suffering from primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a rare liver disease, was on the transplant waiting list for four years. With his condition deteriorating, he received the news that he only had months to live. Fortunately, within hours of being moved onto the urgent transplant list, a deceased donor was found as a match. The successful liver transplant has “transformed his life,” with Muhsin now enjoying increased energy levels, returning to work, and even attending the gym. His story serves as a message of hope for others in similar situations.
Dr. John Hutchinson, consultant hepatologist at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, expressed pride in sharing success stories like Muhsin’s, highlighting the positive impact organ donation has on patients and their families. However, the need for liver transplants remains high, with 13 patients still waiting in West Yorkshire and a further 663 individuals across the UK. The trust is actively encouraging both patients and staff to register their decision to donate and share this decision with loved ones.
