USA: A mother in South Carolina has transformed devastating loss into a powerful gesture that links organ donation to an intimate keepsake. Christine Kinsey founded Blankets from Ben after her son Ben died at 22 and became an organ donor. Parts of him live on through transplant surgery that gave five people a second chance, including the recipient of his lungs who later shared Thanksgiving with Kinsey and her family. The memory of the last thing that touched him is now a catalyst for outreach.

What began as a single granny square has grown into a nonprofit that assembles handmade blankets and sends them to families of organ donors as a tangible reminder of their child. Each blanket is accompanied by Ben’s story and contact information for Kinsey, creating connection between donor families and recipients while honoring the decision to donate. The blankets aim to provide a small measure of comfort and a visible symbol of legacy during the immediate aftermath of loss.

Blankets from Ben has distributed roughly 300 blankets so far with volunteers such as Stephanie Mathis helping to craft and deliver them. Kinsey says receiving a blanket herself was a turning point that led her to create the program with the hope of passing that same support to others. Currently the initiative reaches families locally and in South Carolina and organizers say they are in talks to expand into California and New Mexico.

The effort underscores the human side of transplantation and the unexpected ways donor stories continue to affect lives. By centering the transplant recipients who carry parts of Ben forward and the blankets that carry his story, the nonprofit offers solace and tangible recognition of donors sacrifice. Kinsey plans to expand the program to embrace donors families across the country. She hopes to broaden reach.
