Baptist Health Receives $50K Donation From Heart Transplant Recipient’S Family

The Baptist Health Foundation has received a generous donation of $50,000 from Bob and Jeanne Fitzgerald in honor of their son, Dr. Ryan Fitzgerald, who received a heart transplant. Dr. Fitzgerald, a member of Radiology Consultants at Baptist Health, sits on the Baptist Health Foundation Board and the Arora Board. The donation holds special significance as it comes two decades after his life-saving transplant. The Fitzgerald family expressed their admiration for the heart team at Baptist Health and their gratitude for the care they received, stating that the funds will be put to good use in helping other families.

Dr. Ryan Fitzgerald’s health journey began when he was diagnosed with a coarctation of the aorta as a child, which restricted blood flow in his body. After successful corrective surgery, he lived a healthy life until medical school, when his condition recurred. The doctors recommended another corrective surgery, but due to complications, he ultimately needed a heart transplant. Dr. John Ransom, a cardiovascular surgeon, performed the transplant, and Dr. Steve Hutchins supervised his care post-surgery. These experiences only further motivated Dr. Fitzgerald to pursue his medical studies and contribute to the field.

This donation from the Fitzgerald family not only highlights their personal connection to Baptist Health but also serves as a testament to the exceptional cardiac care provided by the hospital. The funds will undoubtedly have a positive impact on other families facing similar medical challenges, thanks to the dedicated heart team at Baptist Health.
