James Frasier, a 64-year-old army veteran residing in Cecil County, is facing a formidable battle against kidney disease as he desperately awaits a life-altering kidney transplant. Having been diagnosed with a horseshoe kidney in 2017, James’ condition has left him with only one non-functioning kidney, rendering daily activities a formidable challenge. The severity of his condition reflects a broader issue, with the National kidney Foundation indicating that 600,000 veterans suffer from kidney disease, and 40,000 are grappling with kidney failure.

James’ story is part of a larger narrative shared by many veterans, akin to Andre Karns from Harford County, who also seeks a kidney donor. The Veterans Affairs (VA) system, stretched thin, only sees about 160 kidney transplants annually due to stringent eligibility criteria, complicating the lives of those like James who remain on lengthy waiting lists. Despite these challenges, James remains hopeful, actively engaging with the Donor Outreach for Veterans (DOVE) program, which aids in locating potential donors for veterans in need.

Amidst his struggle, James expresses a longing to regain his former vitality, hoping to play with his grandson and escape the confines of his apartment. This distressing situation highlights an urgent appeal for assistance, resonating with those capable of providing a lifeline through organ donation. The plea underscores the pressing demand for greater awareness and support for veterans like James, who tirelessly await a second chance at life.
