19-Year-Old Organ Donor’s Seven-Organ Gift Honored With ProMedica Hospital Walk

USA: A community gathered at ProMedica Hospital on Monday to pay tribute to 19-year-old Jagger Bergy, who died last Friday following a motorcycle crash in Finley and whose decision to be an organ donor set the day’s solemn, hopeful tone. Friends, family and hospital staff lined the halls for an honor walk as the hospital prepared for organ procurement that will send life-saving tissue and organs to others.

Bergy, an athlete at Ottawa-Glandorf High School who had recently passed the ASVAB and been scheduled to begin basic training later this spring, had registered as a donor while he was alive. His mother, Amy, and relatives described a protective, goofy young man whose plans to serve in the military will now be partly realized through recipients of his organs.

Life Connection of Ohio confirmed Bergy would donate seven organs, including heart, lungs, liver, pancreas and a kidney that is expected to go to a military service member, potentially triggering a chain of transplants. Kara Steele of Life Connection of Ohio noted that one donor’s organs can save up to eight lives and that tissue donation can help more than 100 others; about 16 people a day die waiting for a transplant.

Hospital personnel and community members said the honor walk reflected gratitude for Bergy’s choice and for the recipients who will benefit from the transplantation and tissue recovery. Family members said their grief is tempered by pride that his earlier decision will give others a second chance.
